Tips:

  • Research and understand your rights. There are laws that exist to protect and defend disabled employees such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

  • Be an advocate and voice for not only yourself but for fellow disabled employees.

  • Be proactive and convey to your employer how you will execute your job daily utilizing your accommodation(s). Transparency is helpful in navigating these conversations.

  • If you’re applying for a job and the application asks if you have a disability, it’s a good idea to be honest and check the box. Many companies are trying to meet their quotas and actually hire a certain amount of disabled individuals. Thus, checking the disability box can potentially work in your favor.
